Câmara de Lobos is a municipality located in the southern part of the island of Madeira, situated in the Atlantic, southwest of Portugal at a distance of approximately 1000 km. One of its focuses is the deepening of its Local Action Plan for the Circular Economy to create a sustainable and dynamic ecosystem, promoting innovation and rural entrepreneurship, in line with various European initiatives, such as FoodCoP, which focuses on circular bioeconomy and food sustainability.

The main objectives include:

Promotion of Rural Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Creation of an agricultural incubator to support startups and businesses in the agri-food sector, promoting new sustainable agricultural practices.

Efficient Waste Management: Implementation of a composting center for the reuse of organic waste, reducing waste and encouraging regenerative agricultural production.

Promotion of Local Consumption and Food Circularity: Establishment of short distribution circuits for local products, benefiting social institutions, schools and the hotel sector.

Community Training and Awareness: Training of farmers, entrepreneurs and the school community for the adoption of circular bioeconomy practices, ensuring greater integration between urban and rural areas.

Câmara de Lobos leads various innovative initiatives focused on sustainability, digital innovation, and rural development. The ITI Functional Funchal Action Plan includes the creation of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, promoting a multimodal transport hub to improve mobility and reduce environmental impact.

In the field of circular economy, the creation of a composting center stands out, transforming organic waste from agriculture, restaurants, and schools into compost, reinforcing local sustainability.

The municipality is also engaged in the “RURBAN Link” project, connecting cities through bioeconomy and digital transformation. At the same time, the agricultural incubator fosters innovation in the rural sector, supporting entrepreneurs.

Câmara de Lobos is also investing in digital transformation with projects such as “Remote-IT”, exploring remote work models, and the “Smart Cities Challenge”, improving public services through technology.

Additionally, in light of the municipality’s recent application to the European Urban Initiative, Câmara de Lobos hopes to achieve innovative solutions in circular economy and food bioeconomy. This includes an AI-driven Societal Token System to promote sustainable land use and a Resilience Laboratory to integrate new technologies for environmental and agro-economic sustainability.]
